Kraus
presents
us with the accouterments of an artificial myth rather than a culturally
determined one. If certain works suggest allegorical connotations of
primitive or tribal sensibility, equally Kafkaesque and Sadean, they
are created for a decidedly modernist proletariat tribal sensibility,
a culture for whom ironic humor and fatalistic despair are interchangeable
articulations for describing the same experience.
